Siddhartha is a Nobel Prize winning Author Hermann Hesse’s most widely read novel set in India set in the 6th Century in India
It recounts the Spiritual quest of Brahmin boy .How he questioned Traditional teaching and customs ,experienced the way of life the world found answers and refuge in nature .and in the process discovered Love, Compassion, and the unity of life all life.
Hesse’s comment In a Letter
Siddhartha does not in the end learn true wisdom from any teacher but from river that roars in funny way and from kindly old fool who always smiles secretly a saint.”
Hesse called Siddhartha “an Indic Poem” of all his fictional works it is undoubtedly the most impregnated with Indian, religion and philosophy.
Novel dealing with Buddhism, Vedanta, and Yoga.
Hermann Hesse said that “More than half of life I stated and I tried to come to an understanding of the India view of life”.
India is country of religion and spirituality and this Novel is an artistic expression of his understanding of the Indian view of life and modified by his own romantic vision.
Using the historical Buddha’s life as a framework of his fictional narrative technique Hesse appropriated Buddha’s given name Siddhartha for his mythical hero he presented them as two separate figures in the novel.
However the novel is about a quest of life and understanding ,life in spiritual way various way and ritual religion method of Monk’s such as Fast, Meditations, Yoga and celibacy and search for salvation ‘Nirvana’, peace, soul ,it is questioning about Existence, purpose of living life .Tragedy of life taste of love passion , desire ,life of human being , society , and so many component of human being in this novel appealing all kind of life .
At the end of Novel Siddhartha found the answer of his entire questions from river but Novel is very widely described entire journey of Siddhartha for that kind of Universal truth where nobody can reach because it is very difficult and out of understanding from common people .
The impact on mind of reader and style and literary expression of Hesse’s unique and significant.
